Cedar is supposed to be the best wood. Should I use it for everything?

Cedar is a very good wood in terms of longevity and appearance. Unfortunately, it is expensive and structurally not very strong. It is fine for trimwork and siding, but the problem is that the horses like it just as much as you do, if not more. There is an oil in cedar that horses find rather tasty, and they can chew up your expensive siding and trim in an amazingly short period of time. This oil is also why cedar lasts longer than most other woods when exposed to the elements. What to do? Well, you can try to be conscious of where you put any cedar and make sure the horses can’t get to it. Where wood touches the ground, pressure treated lumber will last longer, and is usually much stronger than cedar.
